Emmaus Bristol: HomeEmmaus Bristol is a charity for formerly homeless people, part of the worldwide Emmaus Movement and a member of the Emmaus UK Federation. The purpose of Emmaus is to provide a home, work and support for destitute and homeless people in a supportive community.
People are accepted for who they are and valued for the contribution they can make. The work of Emmaus involves taking unwanted household items, restoring where necessary and selling on to support the community. The objective of every Emmaus community is to become self supporting through its industry.
Each Companion (former homeless person) who joins is given their own en-suite room in our newly developed Shaftesbury House, a small allowance and all living expenses paid for. Shaftesbury House has 18 Companion rooms, a dining/ living room, TV room and community office. In addition there is staff accommodation. Every Companion has to work a 40 hour week in the workshop or helping out in the community.
Our work contributes to the protection of the environment by diverting household items away from land-fill sites. In addition we strive to operate in a way which reduces carbon emissions. Our building at Shaftesbury House has a high insulation rating and has solar water heating panels to reduce energy consumption.
