Emmaus Bristol offers homeless men and women a home, meaningful work and an opportunity to recover self-respect in a supportive environment.
Emmaus Bristol is part of the UK wide Emmaus Movement the headquarters of which are in Cambridge. Emmaus works on the principals of being founded and based in the local community and each is a separate charity in its own right federated to Emmaus UK. There are 17 communities in the UK and over 400 worldwide.
Shaftesbury House, the home of Emmaus Bristol, was completed in October 2003 at a cost of £1 million. We are grateful to the many individuals, trusts and companies who have supported us. Leading company supporters include solicitors Beachcroft Wansbroughs, and property developer Castlemore.
The work element of Emmaus Bristol is based in Barton Manor about 500 metres away from Shaftesbury House. This is where the "business" of Emmaus Bristol is conducted. What we do is take unwanted household items such as:
- Furniture (Sofas, beds, cupboards, tables etc)
- Bicycles
- Electrical goods - Fridges etc
- Consumer electrical - TV's and hi fi's
- Books and CDs
- And other items
Household items - deliveries and collections can be arranged if necessary.
We then where necessary repair or restore them to ensure consistent high quality. In our retail section of Barton Manor we then sell these items on at low cost to the general public.
In addition some items of particular interest or value are sold either on e-bay or at Clevedon Sale rooms just outside Bristol. Items sold in this way have included first edition comics, medals and antique furniture.
